  • Can you find a copy of the book to share at home in the local library?
  • Practise making animal noises together

  • Can you find recycled materials in your house to use and pretend to be a part of an animal e.g. kitchen roll tube for an ele-phant’s trunk

  • Can you find a copy of the book to share at home in the local library?
  • When you are out on a family walk, scoot or ride see if you can find a different object for each colour in the story. Why not take photos so you can make a book or collage when you get home?
  • Can you use your hands as binoculars to look for animals in the park – ducks, birds, cats or dogs?
  • Move like different animals
  • Listen to the story through song. Can you join in with the repetitive phrases?

Maths

Can your child start to show awareness of the numbers 0- 5 in the indoor/outdoor environment e.g. house numbers, car registrations, in shops and on buses?

  • Support and encourage your child to begin to recognise numbers up to 5 and show an interest in counting. Model counting the objects your child is counting with.
  • Listen to and join in with number rhymes – 5 little Ducks, 5 Cheeky Monkeys
  • Encourage your child to look at the ducks/monkeys that are counted and being taken away

 When singing rhymes, present numbers on fingers, showing fingers decreasing and re- counting when we take one away or add one.

Ideas to support children’s early phonological development

  • Use rhymes and songs with words repeated in a string e.g. Row, Row, Row your boat. Clap, Clap, Clap your hands.
  • Say word strings -link with an object of interest e.g. blue block, green grass
  • Blow feathers, blow bubbles and listen to the quiet pop. Feel and hear them pop on your hand, knee, foot, head
  • Listen to the sounds the child is making. Repeat back. Add a new sound.
  • Make a speech sound, then add on another one and then another one to make a pattern e.g. e…i…o….s

Tie some scarves together and pull one end with your child and say ‘pull, pull, pull’

Can you look for the different vegetables when you go shopping: carrots, turnips, parsnips, potatoes?

Blow a ballon up slowly and use the repetitive language…’bigger, bigger, bigger’

Explore, feel/ taste, line up, transport in baskets some new vegetables that you’ve never tried before

Sing ‘Row. Row, Row Your Boat’ with your child as you hold onto their hands and move forwards and back

Pretend a carrot is a spaceship, 2 carrots are drumsticks and bang them on the table, arrange carrot sticks into a smiley face

Chestnut Class – Spring 2 Overview

“I wonder what is happening now that it is spring?”

Could you make a healthy snack together? Could you try any fruits from the story?

Can you go on a bug hunt? What can you find? Can you see a caterpillar?

Be a butterfly – run around and flap your arms up and down

Can you spot all the food in the story when you are shopping?

Could you paint a butterfly by painting one side and folding the paper to make it symmetrical.

Hornbeam Class – Spring 1 Overview

Go for a walk and collect some sticks and build a house

Build a house using building blocks

Use a battery-operated fan to blow cold air onto your children as they join in with huffing and puffing.

Visit a local farm and find the pigs

Look out for the number 3 when out and about, pointing out the number or three objects the same.

Make some gingerbread cookies or a different sweet treat or even something for lunch or dinner.
