- If you have a copy of the book read together, encourage your child to lift the flaps and name the animals.

- Find objects of different colours, can your child put all the red objects together, blue, green etc.
- Sing the song Old MacDonald had a farm , encouraging them to make each animal sound.
- Move like different animals
- Talk about what animals you might find on farm. Play with farm animals if you have any, making the noise each one makes.
- Can you visit the local farm, such as Tam O’Shanters in Thurstaton and find any of the animals from the story.

- Describe the dinosaurs- colour, size, shape.

- Join in singing the song with rhymes and Actions, encouraging your child to do it too.
- Put some small articles of clothes in some soapy water, can you rub the clothes to get then =m clean, explore how the clothes feel now they are wet. Peg them out on the washing line and see what happens to them.
- Can your child start to show awareness of the number 0-10 in the indoor/outdoor environment e.g. house numbers, car registrations etc. Encourage them to count objects, touching each one with their finger as they count them.
- Match 2d shapes, find shapes that are the same and begin to categorise – Circle, square, triuangle, rectangle, diamond, heart.
- When singing rhymes, present numbers on fingers, showing fingers decreasing and re- counting when we take one away or add one. Reinforce number rhymes, 5 cheeky monkeys and /or five little ducks.

“I wonder what is happening now that it is spring?”
Core Texts and Rhymes
Try some of the unusual fruits from the story, cut them up, smell them and lick them!
Can your child name any of the animals from the story.
Watch chestnut staff reading the story on Tapestry or watch the story on You Tube
Count out fruits in your fruit bowl, How many apples have you got, bananas, oranges or even grapes!
Order the fruits by size, which is the biggest or smallest?
Try carrying a small basket or cushion on your head and walk across the room

Look at different vegetables, handle them, smell them, taste or lick them. Cook them and help your child chop them up.
Play a tug of war game saying “Pul, Pull!” You could use a towel or sheet rolled up!
Blow a balloon up say bigger, bigger, bigger, then let go and watch it fly around the room!

Talk about the traffic, look at different types of vehicles, play can you see a red car, big bus etc.

The Messy Magpie story about collecting Rubbish. This story helps children understand what litter is.
Can your child help put the rubbish in the bin at home.
We will look at recycling and materials that can be recycled. Can they find the recycling symbol and help put the recycling in the correct bin at home.
Can your child start to show awareness of the number 5 in the indoor/outdoor environment e.g. house numbers, car registrations, in shops and on buses.
Go on a shape hunt around your home or outside, which shapes can you find- Square, rectangle, triangle, circle. When you find a shape, reinforce the number of sides and corners.
Make 5 sets of objects, can we count out 5 sultanas, 5 cars etc. Show numbers on your fingers as you count. Count to 5 and then say “Give me 5!”(High fiving!)

Sing/ recite rhymes at home:
Change the words of the rhymes, such as “Here we go round the garden chair, garden chair on a warm and sunny morning!” Choose something in your home. Practise self help actions, brush teeth, comb hair, wash face etc Any other skills you want to encourage?
Build a wall for a Teddy out of boxes, blocks, construction sets or whatever you have to hand. Reinforce vocabulary, sat on and off , up and down.

Go outdoors and look for bugs, lift up stones, move pots etc. to see where they are hiding.

Count out fruits in your fruit bowl, are there any from the story?
Squirt paint onto folded paper, unfold and press two sides together to make a symmetrical print.
Reinforce days of the week, today is ……, we go to school, or stay at home.

Plant a seed or even carrot tops in water to see how they grow. Encourage your child to water when necessary. (We will do some planting in school too)
If you have a garden let your child do some digging, weeding and watering.

Chestnut Class – Spring 1 Overview
“I wonder what is happening now that it is spring?”
Bake Bread and help with the mixing and kneading.
Go on a shopping trip and ask them to make a choice from some different types of bread, such as rolls or baguette.
Can they help you spread their bread with a sandwich topping.
Go on a hunt for things that are red or sort objects that are red and another colour.

Cook porridge together, to taste or use for sensory play.
Look out for the number 3 when out and about, pointing out the number or three objects the same.
Talk about size eg big chair, middle size chair, little chair.
Go on a hunt for small or big things, such as a big teddy and a small teddy, a big bowl and a small bowl.

Enjoy ice lollies and link this to melting
Make your own play snow using 1 cup of cornflour: 1 cup of hair conditioner.
Make ice / ice lollies in the freezer, showing the children the water before you put it in.
Make snow men in real snow or improvise with play dough, recipe shared on Tapestry. Use twigs, buttons etc.
Talk about what we wear when it is cold, naming different objects such as hat, scarf, gloves.
